Double Discount Calculator

An extra discount at checkout applies to the sale price, not the original ticket price. Enter both percentage reductions to find the amount you actually pay and compare the offer with a single discount.

How to use the calculator

Enter the original price, the first markdown, and the additional percentage off. Calculate to see the price after the first reduction and the final amount. Use any currency: the figures all keep the same unit.

Formula and equivalent discount

P ร— (1 โˆ’ d1/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d2/100)

P = Original price; d1โ€ฆd2 = Discount (%).

Equivalent discount (%) = 100 ร— [1 โˆ’ (1 โˆ’ d1/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d2/100)]

The first factor gives the fraction remaining after the sale; the second reduces that remainder. A 25% markdown and an extra 10% do not make 35% off: the extra reduction is smaller because its base has already fallen.

Worked example

Original price: 120.00; 25% + 10%.

  1. Price after discount 1: 120.00 ร— (1 โˆ’ 25/100) = 90.00
  2. Price after discount 2: 90.00 ร— (1 โˆ’ 10/100) = 81.00

Total savings: 39.00. Equivalent discount: 32.50%.

Questions about successive discounts

Do two 10% discounts give 20% off?

No. On 100, the price becomes 90 and then 81. You save 19, so the equivalent discount is 19%.

Does the order change the final price?

For percentage-only discounts without intermediate rounding, it does not: multiplication gives the same product in either order. Intermediate prices differ.

Can I replace two discounts with one?

Yes. Use the equivalent discount reported above. It is calculated from the remaining fraction, not by adding the rates.

Calculations keep full precision until display. A retailer rounding each stage may charge a slightly different amount. Only successive percentage discounts are supported; fixed-amount coupons and tax are not included.
