Triple Discount Calculator

Three promotions can apply to the same purchase: a markdown, an extra coupon, and a loyalty reduction. Each acts on the price left by the preceding step. This calculator follows all three stages and reports the combined saving.

How to use the calculator

Enter the original price and the three percentages in the order they apply. The two intermediate prices show the base used for the next reduction. The third field is required; enter zero if the last promotion does not apply.

Formula and equivalent discount

P ร— (1 โˆ’ d1/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d2/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d3/100)

P = Original price; d1โ€ฆd3 = Discount (%).

Equivalent discount (%) = 100 ร— [1 โˆ’ (1 โˆ’ d1/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d2/100) ร— (1 โˆ’ d3/100)]

A third percentage multiplies the remainder after two reductions. Its monetary benefit is the price after step two multiplied by the third rate. The equivalent percentage expresses the whole three-stage offer against the original price.

Worked example

Original price: 200.00; 20% + 10% + 5%.

  1. Price after discount 1: 200.00 ร— (1 โˆ’ 20/100) = 160.00
  2. Price after discount 2: 160.00 ร— (1 โˆ’ 10/100) = 144.00
  3. Price after discount 3: 144.00 ร— (1 โˆ’ 5/100) = 136.80

Total savings: 63.20. Equivalent discount: 31.60%.

Questions about successive discounts

What do three 10% discounts equal?

The remaining fraction is 0.9 ร— 0.9 ร— 0.9 = 0.729. You pay 72.9% of the original price, an equivalent discount of 27.1%.

How much does the third discount save?

Apply its rate to the price after the second discount. If that price is 144 and the third rate is 5%, it saves another 7.20.

What if the third rate is 0% or 100%?

A zero rate leaves the second-stage price unchanged. A 100% rate reduces the remaining price to zero and makes the total saving 100%.

Calculations keep full precision until display. A retailer rounding each stage may charge a slightly different amount. Only successive percentage discounts are supported; fixed-amount coupons and tax are not included.
